Madison's Urban Design Commission wants more information on a proposed face-lift to an "iconic" Downtown building before signing off on the plan, Ald. Marsha Rummel said late Wednesday.
Rummel, a member of the commission, said the body voted unanimously to refer the plan for the US Bank Plaza building on the Capitol Square to the Landmarks Commission. It could then return to the UDC for possible approval.
Urban Land Interests, which bought the glass-walled, nine-story building in January, wants to square off two of the building's atriums and add landscaped terraces to their roofs, as well as add a six-story addition, among other changes.
"Usually a big iconic building that means so much to the city should have some more process," Rummel said.
She said the commission didn't find major flaws in Urban Land Interests' proposal, but "we weren't ready to say we had enough information to go with their proposal."
The Landmarks Commission is scheduled to meet next on Aug. 4. It's not clear if it will take up the plan then.
The Urban Design Commission took no action Wednesday on a plan to build a five-story, 128-room hotel at 610 John Nolen Drive.
Rummel said the item was on the commission's agenda for "information only" and that it would be up to developers of the planned Hilton Garden Inn to bring it back to the commission for a vote.
